Frequently asked questions.

My power went out and my car is trapped in the garage. What can I do?

If your power goes out, and the door is down, you should pull the disengage cord that should be hanging from the operator arm. It will normally be a red string with a plastic part attached for handling. Once you pull this firmly, it will unlatch your garage door from the operator and allow you to raise the door manually by hand. Depending on the size and weight of the door, it may take 2 people to raise the garage door.

My garage door remote or keypad is not working. How do I fix it?

Most of the time, when a remote or keypad is not working, it is simply a dead battery. To access the batteries in a keypad, there is normally a plastic cover that pulls down on the bottom, below the numbers. Removing this cover will give you access to the batteries, normally a AA, AAA, or 9v battery. Once this has been replaced, the keypad should be operational. Many hand-held remotes have an internal “watch” battery, that requires taking the plastic housing apart to gain access. Keep an eye out for possible screws hidden behind the clip on the remote.

My garage door seems really noisy. Is there a way to make it more quiet?

There are many reasons a garage door can seem noisy. If able, it is best to lubricate the door every few months. We recommend using garage door lubricant, which is available at any hardware store. The key components to spray will be all the door hinges and the rollers. It is also good to spray the entire spring, which will be visible over the top of the door. Be careful not to over-lubricate hinges and springs, as the spray can drip onto the face of the garage door and cause possible stains.

While lubricating your door will help it remain quiet, most of the noise will likely be caused by the garage door openers. Replacing your old unit with a newer dc-drive garage door opener can have a drastic effect on how quiet a garage door can be. Come by our office to see a demonstration!

How long should my springs last on my garage door?

Most garage door springs are rated for 10,000 cycles. Depending on how much use the garage door gets, this typically takes anywhere from 5-15 years, with some extreme cases being a shorter or longer period. When a spring does eventually break, we highly recommend that both springs be replaced (in cases where 2 springs are present). This will save money and headaches in the long run.
